Come One, Come All: Group Volunteer Opportunities at the Atlanta Children’s ShelterIn-Kind Donations: Assists with receiving and organizing all in-kind donations throughout the year and for special events such as Project Renewal, Achiever’s Celebration and Holiday House. Organizes donation and resource rooms, assists with creating and streamlining an inventory system for tracking donations and assists with redirecting donations to partnering agencies where applicable. Classrooms: Assists teachers in the classrooms with the activities outlined for the day (i.e. arts and crafts, story time, field trips, small group activities, etc.). Serve as classroom monitors during regularly scheduled staff meetings. This opportunity requires a minimum of 3 hours per week Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Please visit our Early Childcare Page for more information. Read-to-Me: Every Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. volunteers are assigned one preschooler or a group of preschoolers for one-on-one reading time. Please visit our Early Childcare Page for more information. Donation Drive: Conducts donation drives to help meet the needs of the homeless families that we serve. This opportunity is for volunteers who are unable to volunteer on-site during the week, but would like to support our mission. Please consider developing a donation drive around the current needs of the families enrolled in our program. Annual 5K Run/Walk: The annual 5K Run/Walk raises awareness about the plight of homeless children and families in our community and provides financial support for our mission. Volunteers support this event in a number of ways including Race Day set-up crew, Race Day registration, volunteer photographer, hospitality support and finish line cheerleaders. Annual Achiever’s Celebration: This event honors former parents who have achieved self-sufficiency and is an opportunity for them to recount their journeys. The staff and Board of the Atlanta Children’s Shelter will be joined by 150 service providers, philanthropists and community partners. Volunteers provide support the day of the event which includes guest registration, guest seating and distributing gifts to the families being honored. Annual Holiday House: We make the holidays a special time for the homeless children and families we serve through our annual Holiday House event. We create a place where parents can ‘shop’ free of charge for warm clothing, gifts for their children and family necessities. Volunteers provide support the week of the event which includes receiving, sorting and staging donated items, greeting guests and families and escorting families through the Holiday House shopping experience.
