Dr. Jackye Brown to step down in June 2010 after 20 years at the helm

ATLANTA, January 15, 2010 – Dr. Jackye Brown is retiring from her position as Executive Director of the Atlanta Children’s Shelter, effective June 2010. The organization already has formed a search committee and is interviewing experienced candidates to help lead the Atlanta Children’s Shelter into its next stage, which will include expanded facilities in Atlanta and a planned launch of services in Gwinnett County.

“Jackye Brown has been the backbone of this organization for two decades, so we have big shoes to fill,” said Atlanta Children’s Shelter Board Chair Susan O’Farrell. “We have a number of qualified candidates from the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors. The goal is to find the right combination of leadership and passion for helping homeless families – someone who can really move the Atlanta Children’s Shelter forward during a very exciting time.”

Dr. Brown has been Executive Director of the Atlanta Children’s Shelter since 1989. With more than 40 years of experience in child welfare, social work practice and education, and agency administration, Dr. Brown was instrumental in guiding the Atlanta Children’s Shelter through its formative years to become an award-winning model for homeless services organizations across the country, recognized for its diversity of community support and a track record of helping homeless families achieve independence.

In retirement, Dr. Brown plans to remain in Atlanta, continue serving as a part-time Instructor for the Georgia State University School of Social Work, and spend time with her family. Dr. Brown has also agreed to remain with the Shelter during its transition to a new Executive Director.
